What we do

Everything from the ridge down to the downpipes.

Roofs and roofline work for houses in and around Darlington. If it’s on the outside of your roof, it’s probably something John and Charlie can sort.

  1. 01

    Slate roofing

Stripping tired slate roofs back to the rafters, new membrane and battens, then the slates laid back on course by course. The photos further down this page are one of those jobs.

  2. 02

    Ridge tiles and repointing

Loose or cracked ridge tiles reset and repointed, so the top of the roof is sound and weathertight again.

“Knocked on my door for ridge tiles and bulging on side of roof to be fixed, great job good cost”

    Glenn Milner, Google review

  3. 03

    Roof repairs

Bulging slopes, slipped tiles and the jobs someone else left half done. Customers mention calling C&M in after being let down elsewhere.

“generally tidied up the roof (after a previous botch job by others)”

    Fascias and soffits

Old timber boards replaced with uPVC fascias and soffits, including end-of-roof protective fascias, and existing soffits cleaned up.

    “The new fascias look brilliant.”

    Susan Allan, Google review

  5. 05

    Guttering and downpipes

New guttering and downpipes fitted, or existing gutters inspected, cleaned, re-sealed and repaired.

“gutters where cleaned re-sealed and made some repairs to the soffit’s”

    Andrew “Andy” Channer, Google review

  6. 06

    Dry verge

Dry verge fitted along the gable ends, often done alongside new fascias and guttering in the same visit.

“Dry verge, all guttering, down pipes, upvc fascias, soffits.”

    Brian Usher, Google review

  7. 07

    Gutter and soffit cleaning

Gutters cleared and soffits cleaned back to white, for when the boards are sound and just need looking after.

“we had what looked like brand new soffits as they were cleaned beautifully”

    Susan Allan, Google review

The work

One slate roof, start to finish.

These are C&M’s own photos of a slate re-roof on a terraced house, taken as the job went along. No stock pictures, just the roof, the battens and the lads doing the work.

  1. Stripped back to the rafters

The old slates and battens come off, so the whole slope can be seen and put right rather than patched.

A slate roof stripped down to the rafters and old battens, with one of the C&M team sitting on the roof
  2. Membrane under the battens

A breather membrane runs across the rafters, with battens fixed over it to carry the slates.

Close-up of breather membrane laid across a roof under rows of battens
  3. New battens, course by course

Fresh timber battens go on in straight, even rows, ready for the slates to go back.

New pale timber battens laid in rows over white membrane between two sections of slate roof
  4. Slates going back on

Then the slates are laid back on, row after row, up towards the ridge.

  5. Finished

A full slope of slate, sound from the gutter to the ridge, with the chimney and the ladder still in shot.

Who you’ll get

John and Charlie.

C&M is two people, and they’re the two who turn up and do the job. Customers name them both in their reviews, and they talk about them the same way: friendly, straight with you about what needs doing, and tidy.

A fair few of those customers had been let down by someone else first. If that’s you, you’re in good company.

“After trying a few others in the area and being stung with shoddy workmanship and high prices I wasn’t looking forwarded to having my gutters inspected and cleaned.”

Andrew “Andy” Channer, Google review

“Two great guys communicate with and know what they are doing which was refreshing 👍”

They replaced the facias, soffits, downpipes and gutters on our house, repointed the ridge tiles and generally tidied up the roof (after a previous botch job by others) in less than 2 days. New battens laid over membrane between courses of old slate
“Had both gutters/soffits cleaned & end of roof protective fascias fitted. John & Charlie knocked on our door on speck as doing work in area. Well timed as we were going to get our soffits cleaned soon. They gave us an excellent quote and in the time we popped out and returned we had what looked like brand new soffits as they were cleaned beautifully. We then had following day our end of roof protective fascias done for first time, as again John gave us an excellent quote. The new fascias look brilliant. These 2 guys are so professional, hardworking, but really friendly, and keep you informed throughout. They are also very tidy and no mess of building materials left. I would highly recommend this company to anyone. Thank you for great work done.”
